To a somewhat muted applause yesterday, Tim Cook revealed the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Nobody truly cared about the 8 or 8 Plus – it looks like the 7 & 7 Plus. In fact shouldn’t it be called the 7S & 7S Plus? However, with the iPhone X starting at SGD$1,648 for 64GB, the 8 & 8 Plus may be a good middle ground for many.
Unassumingly familiar from afar, on a closer examination the 8 series is heavy. 7% heavier than the 7 series, and 15.6%-17.5% than the 6 series because of its all glass design which Apple claims is “The most durable glass ever in a smartphone, front and back”. For those of you still using the 6, this is a huge change. Why glass? It enables fast wireless charging, with a 50% charge in 30 minutes expected.
Display wise, it features the True Tone technology found in the iPad Pro which reacts to environmental lighting to make sure the colors and accurate. Additionally, Dolby Vision and HDR10 is also supported for a more immersive movie experience.
While the back camera is quite similar to the 7 series’, the A11 Bionic chip has amped up the game with Portrait Lighting, which adds new light modes using facial landmarking.
The A11 Bionic chip will be 70% faster in multitasking and 30% faster in graphics processing and yet consume the same power as the 7 series’ A10. It also includes a dual-core Neural engine to handle image processing for Face ID (hence the name Bionic) – HOWEVER, the Face ID is not available on the 8 series, only the iPhone X.
iPhone X is arguably the most exciting phone of 2017, but at such a price point one can purchase the soon-to-be-released Red Hydrogen One. Is the iPhone 8 & 8 Plus good enough to upgrade to? We think so. Read the full breakdown by Forbes.
