“It’s their job to create really memorable experiences, and this requires a creative mind alongside skills such as project planning and people management.”
To the younger generation out there (and perhaps the not so young looking for a change), ever wondered what job requires a multitude of skills, crosses disciplines, encompasses all aspects of society AND as a bonus won’t be stolen by robots? Yes, it’s events management.
Other than it being financially true; business events in Singapore saw a 15 per cent year-on-year growth in 2016 with STB which generated approximately S$611 million in tourism receipts, a 28 per cent increase year-on-year, a continuing growth of +1-4% is also expected (for such a small country) in the future.
So what does it take to be a good events manager? According to Mark Norman, lecturer in event management at Sheffield Hallam University. “Event managers need to be masters of all trades,” he says. “It’s their job to create really memorable experiences, and this requires a creative mind alongside skills such as project planning and people management.”
That’s a tough combination of artistic vision and hard skills, but with the proper training, education and exposure anyone can have a piece of this billion-dollar-industry pie. Read more about what it takes here.
